What does a fractional CMO cost in Singapore?

If you are a founder in Singapore weighing up senior marketing help, the first question is usually cost. The honest answer is that it depends on scope, but the way fractional CMOs price their work is fairly consistent, and once you understand it you can compare options properly.

What you are actually paying for

A fractional CMO is a senior marketing leader who works with you part-time. You are paying for three things:

  • Strategy: where growth will come from, which channels to use and what to spend.

  • Leadership: setting priorities for your team, freelancers or agencies, and holding the work to account.

  • Delivery: in some cases, hands-on work such as paid ads, conversion rate optimisation, email or PR.

The third point is where fractional CMOs differ most. Some only advise. Others, like me, set the strategy and do much of the work. That changes the value of each hour and what you need to hire alongside them.

The three common pricing models

1. A fixed-fee audit or first project. Most engagements start here. You pay a set fee for a defined piece of work, such as a growth audit and 90-day roadmap. It is the lowest-risk way to see how someone thinks before you commit.

2. A monthly retainer. The standard model for ongoing work. You agree the scope, the outcomes you are working towards and how often you meet, then pay a fixed monthly fee. Good retainers are tied to deliverables and targets, not a count of hours.

3. A launch or project fee. For a defined piece of work with a start and end, such as launching a new product, entering a new market or rebuilding your acquisition engine.

I avoid day rates. They reward time spent rather than results, and they make it hard for you to budget.

What drives the cost up or down

  • Scope: strategy only, or strategy plus hands-on delivery across several channels.

  • Stage: a business with clean data and a working funnel needs less fixing than one starting from scratch.

  • Team: if you already have a marketer or agency, the CMO directs them. If not, more of the work lands on the CMO.

  • Markets: a Singapore-only plan is simpler than one covering Singapore, the UK and Europe.

  • Commitment: longer engagements usually come with better value per month.

How it compares with a full-time hire

A full-time CMO in Singapore is a senior salary, plus recruitment fees, benefits, equity expectations, a notice period and the time it takes to find the right person. For many growing businesses, that is too much commitment before the marketing engine is proven.

A fractional CMO gives you senior judgement at a fraction of that cost, with the flexibility to scale up, scale down or stop. The trade-off is availability: you get a share of someone's week, not all of it. For most companies with product-market fit but no proven growth engine yet, that trade-off works in their favour.

How it compares with an agency

An agency usually runs one or two channels with a team you rarely meet. A fractional CMO owns the whole plan, decides where money goes across every channel and is accountable for the commercial result. Many businesses use both: the fractional CMO sets direction and the agency executes.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. What exactly will you deliver in the first 90 days?

  2. Which numbers will we judge success on?

  3. Will you do the work, or direct someone else to?

  4. Can we start with a small fixed-fee project?

  5. What is the notice period if it is not working?

How I work

Every engagement with Kompass starts with a free 30-minute call and a fixed-fee growth audit. After that, clients choose a launch project or an ongoing fractional CMO retainer, scoped around deliverables and outcomes. I am based in Singapore and work with clients globally, including the UK, the Netherlands and the US.
